Word of the Day

Codswallop (noun)

  • nonsense; language, behavior, or ideas that are absurd and contrary to good sense

synonyms: poppycock, twaddle, balderdash, hogwash, tommyrot, tosh, piffle, bunkum

An example: That article I read the other day was a load of codswallop!

Isn’t the English language strange?….

By the way, the earliest known citation of the phrase “codswallop” in print is the script of a 1959 episode of the UK TV series ‘Hancock’s Half Hour‘… (This is why I chose it!)

The word has been around much longer than that, but its origins are unclear (although there are plenty of theories!).
