Hot Cross Buns

Years ago the local bakers went out early, with their carts, on Good Friday morning. They would ring their handbells and cry out:

Hot cross buns, hot cross buns!

~

From this, a rhyme evolved:

Hot cross buns, hot cross buns

One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns

If you have no daughters, give them to your sons

One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns

This rhyme dates back to the 18th century – maybe even earlier – so these sweet buns with their spicy pastry cross and sticky glaze have been around for hundreds of years!

We should nurture old traditions.

Sharing a hot cross bun with someone is said to ensure friendship throughout the coming year.

So please take a piece and enjoy!

(And next year I will try to make my own!)
