The second week of Advent has arrived, with many in a shopping frenzy already. And who can describe it better than our old friend Charles Dickens, in “A Christmas Carol”:
“… the customers were all so hurried and so eager in the hopeful promise of the day, that they tumbled up against each other at the door, clashing their wicker baskets wildly; and left their purchases upon the counter, and came running back to fetch them, and committed hundreds of the like mistakes in the best humour possible…”
I love looking through “A Christmas Carol” every year, and revel in the rich verbosity of Dickensian storytelling! Another favourite part is when The Ghost of Christmas Present arrives:
“The crisp leaves of holly, mistletoe, and ivy, reflected back the light, as if so many little mirrors had been scattered there; and such a mighty blaze went roaring up the chimney as that dull petrifaction of a hearth had never known in Scrooge’s time, or Marley’s, or for many and many a winter season gone. Heaped up upon the floor, to form a kind of throne, were turkeys, geese, game, poultry, brawn, great joints of meat, suckling pigs, long wreaths of sausages, mince-pies, plum puddings, barrels of oysters, red hot chestnuts, cherry-cheeked apples, juicy oranges, luscious pears, immense twelfth cakes, and seething bowls of Punch, that made the chamber dim with their delicious steam.”
I have also seen several film versions of A Christmas Carol, as well as countless stage productions. The Muppets film version is, however, still one of my favourites! Take a look at this clip:
For the second Advent week I wish everyone:
Time to sit down with a friend for a cup of tea and a chat
Inspiration
A moment to read a poem or part of a favourite book
😀
What a lovely wish…Dicken’s Christmas Carol is my favorite Christmas story…
It’s a timeless story… I could read it again and again!
Dickens was such a great writer. Very enjoyable to see that you included a passage from his book.
I think there are parts of it I know almost off by heart!
I’d love to have tea with you Cathy and of course, several of the muppets….oh what a time we’d have… 😉
That would be really fun! LOL!
What a glorious post Cathy, mixing the soft and sentimental with glorious fun! DO hope you will not mind if I repost to a few friends somewhat closer to Christmas!!
Don’t mind at all! Have a nice week!
Love those Muppets in Christmas Carol–and love Dickens. Had tea with a friend last night and we chatted about books and Advent.
That’s nice – can’t beat a good chinwag over a cuppa!
Charles Dickens must have had a premonition of American Black Friday. *L* Truly beautiful writing. I agree with your choice of Muppet movie, too!
I think Dickens was a very wise man… his social criticism would be just as profound in the current day and age!
Gotta love a German Christmas,. My mother has filled me with romantic stories of her childhood Christmas’s in Trier. I would love to see you do a blog post on the little porcupine dolls that are reaching for hugs. I forgot what they are called, but relatives would send them every year with chocolates and baked goods from Hamburg and mom would play recordings of a choir of young boys singing Christmas hymns in German. Merry Christmas!!
Christmas IS romantic – nostalgic even, here in Germany. I don’t know about the dolls, but they are probably a regional thing. Trier is quite a distance from us. But I’m sure some of those baked goods you received would have been gingerbread… a speciality all over Germany at Christmas. Thanks for your comment – always good to hear from you!
Dickens and the Muppets! Time with a friend and a poem or a favorite book…what a lovely wish! Advent is a lovely contemplative time. Thank you. Debra
Have a lovely week Debra!
Oooh, I enjoyed that. My Christmas spirit is up another notch or two, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Angel is currently crazy about the old cartoon Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol…I should get the Muppets, too!
Don’t know the Magoo one, but recommend the Muppets – a classic!
The Muppets version is definitely one of my favorites, too!
Can’t beat it! 😉
I should have read your post earlier – instead of having had a busy weekend.
But, we have snow and a pure winter wonderland scenery.
Uta, it is snowy here too. Really lovely and deep! Have a good week, and enjoy the snow!
Oh you reminded me, that I wanted to read the christmas carol, too. Have to get the book out 😉 Happy second advent!
You too Simone! 😀
Great Muppet X Mas Ending!!! HA!!!
The Muppets are such a great team! 😉
I used to WORSHIP Mrs. Piggy!
Miss Piggy plays Bob Cratchit’s wife in this version of A Christmas Carol! I’ve always had a soft spot for Gonzo, and Animal, and and and… Love them all!
I could never love gonzo as I love SUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPER Grover!!!
And that’s a love that will last forever. I could NEVER betray Super Grover!!!
Ah….you are having snow! And you said it is lush and deep. It’s cold enough here to snow, but not on the farm. The mountains around us look like snow so I hope it is lush and deep up there.
Happy Second Advent Week!
