Tuesday View (21st January)

As January progresses I am becoming more and more convinced that really cold winter weather will pass us by this year. The lack of snow makes it rather dull!

Here’s today’s picture – very little difference to last week, perhaps a little greener? (See the moss bottom right!)

And a frosty one from last week.

When I see all the bare soil now I find it hard to believe how crowded it looks in summer!

Do you get a lot of moss in your garden?

Have you had much frost this winter?

Are you as fed up with grey winter days as I am! πŸ˜‰

Have a great week everyone!

  1. I feel what your saying! Grey skies and rain pretty much sums up our winter here in just off the Pennines. We only had 1 frosty morning and that was before Christmas. I’m not complaining mind, I get up at 4am for work so the snow and frost is not my friend! Do you know my geraniums are still flowering in the front garden!

    • And I have still got a snapdragon with a bud on it! They don’t usually survive winters here! Snow can be annoying if you have to travel, but some good white frosts at least would be nice. Maybe we’ll both get some of that arctic air yet. πŸ˜‰

      • I have kinda missed taking pictures of frozen seed pods, but the past couple of winters have been pretty awful around here -14 was becoming too extreme for me!
It caused our pipes to explode a few years ago and flooded our utility room, 4 days before Christmas! All the Xmas stock was ruined, freezer, washer, dryer all wrecked! So a quiet winter, of drizzle is fine for me lol, drizzle is our default weather around here anyway! We all have webbed feet so it working out for us nicely! Lol xxx

  2. We had a rare light frost this morning but more mild weather is forecast. I have noticed more moss in the garden this year as usually it is too dry to grow in the summer and too cold in the winter. We still get enough sunny spells to get out in the garden and go for walks so I am enjoying this mild winter.

    • Living in a valley does mean a lot of mist and low cloud in the autumn and winter months, but I mustn’t complain – we have had a few sunny days in between.

  3. Oh my, here in NW Indiana, we are going back down to 0 F tonight and below with snow on the ground. Would be nice to see a little green πŸ™‚

  4. IΒ΄ve seen a lot of different moss-species this winter. I got interested in and looked for books to learn more about moss. To me this winter seemed green and warm up to today. Finally we got frost and some snowflakes. πŸ™‚

    • Hi Uta – looks like the north is getting winter again, but we’re still very mild and damp here. I also started reading about mosses last winter – must look for that book again…

  5. Any grey day is one too many! But there are enough blue sky days to make me smile. Next week it is supposed to get cold, but the forecast has said that for the last month. No moss at all here, too dry!

    • Our forecast says the same, but let’s wait and see! If we don’t get any frost or drying winds soon our garden will be just mud and moss – not so pretty!

    • We have a lot on our roof – it’s amazing stuff. The birds often throw bits down or if it rains heavily it gets washed off. I am always surprised when a dry piece in summer will suddenly flourish within hours after some rain!

  6. Grey fog this morning, I prefer the winter to be cold and crisp, and to have a proper sense of time and season that brings order to my life. This endless grey dreary stuff confuses my senses!

  7. Your gardens are still neatly green, that’s amazing this time of year. I bet winter will arrive soon for you so I wouldn’t count out mother nature just yet. We have not had as much snow but we have been really cold. We are suppose to have single digit temperatures the rest of the week with a bit of snow tonight and tomorrow. I noticed this morning there were no birds on the birdfeeders, so the cold and the snow must be coming. πŸ˜‰

    • The birds and wildlife always seem to know best when to take cover. The birds have been chirping like it’s spring here, and our little squirrel has been very active too. Our weather forecast says cold next week, but I’m not convinced. πŸ˜‰

  8. Gorgeous day you are having πŸ™‚ We are once again under a storm watch lol 5 to 8 inches are forecast for us up here in northern New England while others they say will get well over a foot. No melting or beach trips for me as they say below 0F for most of the week Aha winter’s death grip πŸ™‚ I am so happy even passing storms can’t wreck my day πŸ™‚

  9. Your view looks as beautiful as ever Cathy. I may regret saying this if we’re snowed in up our hill for a few weeks but I’d love a bit of snow too. Snowmen and sledging followed by hot chocolate would be very welcome – just for a few days, then Spring can come!

    • Absolutely my sentiments Andrea. I doesn’t seem we’ve had winter before a little snow has fallen. I’d love a frosty afternoon of snowy fun with the dogs, and then some dry spring sunshine!

    • Thanks Sheryl! I can understand how you feel as we usually have snow on and off through the winter and it does tend to drag on. Just a little would be nice though, but I’m convinced spring is round the corner here. πŸ˜‰

  10. We’ve had the odd bright day Cathy but with so much rain this winter the predominant colour has been grey 😦 Plenty of moss here – could go into business selling it.

  11. As the cold, nasty weather usually arrives in January/February I’m far from thinking it’s all over. We have some moss and lots of lichen in the trees which is wonderful. Not much frost up to now and not too many grey days but I wish for spring too. Have a good week too, Cathy πŸ™‚

  12. I’m looking forward to seeing the crowded view in summer! It has been a mild, but very wet, winter so far – there’s still time for some snow yet though.

    • Very wet here too, but mostly just from drizzle and mist. I am still hoping for a little snow to build a snowman πŸ˜‰ , but doubt there’ll be a big freeze now.

    • I am actually quite convinced spring isn’t far off, although a cold spell has been forecast… but they’ve been promising us snow for weeks now and it always turns to rain! Still, everything will have a good start if it stays so damp!

  13. Hi Cathy, I am finding the endless wet but mild weather rather dreary, I much prefer the occasional days like yesterday when it was cold but clear and sunny, at least it feels like winter, but everywhere is so boggy it feels bad t even walk on the grass, and although the weeds are loving it actually weeding is impossible because the soil is so wet it clings to the roots and I run the risk of losing half my garden soil! As for moss and frosts, lots of the former, particularly in the grass in the back garden and on my tree stump, and still none of the latter. And I have a crocus blooming. Wonder if we are in for a cold February to make up for it?

    • It’s the same here Janet. I’d love to do some tidying up but it is just mud out there! A crocus? Wonderful! My snowdrops aren’t out yet – at least I would be able to forget about them for another month if it snowed, but it’s barely been below zero for weeks! Yes, wonder what February will bring… πŸ˜‰ (Sunshine I hope!)

  14. To answer: Moss, not too much, I like what I get. Frost, yes frost every day but no real moisture. Yes, gray for days now…no sun, not much snow, too dry. 😦 Hope Spring and rains come soon. Your view is still quite colorful…for winter. πŸ™‚

    • I am also hoping for spring, but we don’t need ny more rain for a while. It’s extremely muddy out there! πŸ˜‰ (Thank goodness for wellington boots!) Hope you get your rain and we both get some sun!
