Last week the weather was wonderful, temperatures reaching the mid-twenties by Friday and Saturday. The garden was, however, begging for water… which we got on Sunday! It rained almost all day – lovely gentle warm rain – and you could almost see the plants growing. Today we are getting some more…

A Sunny April Afternoon in the Garden

On one of our walks around the garden last week the doggies and I “pawsed” for a rest… πŸ˜‰

Flowery Butter

I finally got around to making the flowery butter I had envisaged. This would look lovely if guests are coming!

(I softened a little butter and simply rolled it in some clean dry edible flowers and petals, forming a sausage shape. Wrapped in clingfilm and chilled it will then remain looking this pretty for a week or more. πŸ˜€ )

Fiddleheads with Flowery Butter

The ostrich ferns are now almost fully open – things are moving quickly since the rain. These are the young shoots, often known as “fiddleheads”…

The fiddleheads – the just emerging shoots of Matteuccia struthiopteris – were a disappointment. Raw they taste delicious, but several internet sources recommend cooking them for safety reasons. They taste a little green, and that’s it. 😦

  1. Charming bouquet, Cathy! I also like picking the odd wildflower for the vase as they’re so plentyful and one doesn’t notice a gap. I’d love to see more than the paws…some day maybe or are they a little shy? Your butter looks beautiful – I shall make that too πŸ™‚

    • Thanks Annette. I have always thought I shouldn’t let this blog become a doggie blog, so my two dogs will remain in the background, but when they lay down like that with the sun shining on that patch of flowers between them I just couldn’t resist! LOL!

    • Thank you Susan! It would be so good to invite everyone round for tea… I’d get the posh tablecloth and china tea service out for you all! LOL! πŸ˜€

  3. I was thinking I had missed some of your posts and couldn’t work out how, silly me! Love the idea of the butter, I will try that, although we don’t use much butter being in olive oil land. A very pretty vase, I like the wild flowers mixed in, very natural. The ferns my not have tasted of much but they look very inviting.

    • The beauty of the butter is that you can make as much or as little as you need! A shame about the ferns… they have grown at a rate of knots now but I shall still nibble at the raw new shoots occasionally as they taste really good raw.

  4. I had no idea you could eat the new fern fronds, and I love the look of your flowery butter. Isn’t euphorbia brilliant in a vase? I really like the contrast with the blue, and the softness from the wildflowers.

    • It is apparently only the Ostrich fern that is edible, and then only cooked. But many people do eat them raw (or pickled…) and never seem to suffer! I love all the different Euphorbias in the garden, and a little makes a big impact in a vase. Wild flowers always look lovely when put in a vase!

  5. Flowery butter is a new one to me. What a lovely idea. I must say I never thought of eating ferns. But they look so pretty unfurling that I don’ t think that I can bear to pick them. Euphorbia polychroma is lovely at this time of the year. A nice idea for a vase.

    • We have so many Ostrich ferns that I have to pull some up every year – a few shoots are never missed, and we like to nibble the raw ones now and then as we walk around the garden!

  7. I love the flowers in your little arrangement, Cathy. They are so sweet. And your description of the rain sounds so lovely. Like the whole garden just enjoyed a very comforting, warm bath! I won’t forget about the beautiful “log” of butter…that’s a must for a nice luncheon or tea! My week is going well, and I hope yours is, too, my friend.

    • The rain has been wonderful for the garden so far, and it looks like more showers are on the way today. The ferns in particular have grown daily. I’m sure if I sat there for an hour or so I could watch them unfurling! Glad you are having a good week Debra – always good to hear! Our week is also going well – it’s May Day holiday here tomorrow, so it’s a short week too! πŸ˜€

    • I’d give the ferns a miss Sarah! I do like them raw, but am now hesitant after reading about possible reactions… a shame, as they would taste so good as a salad with some oil and balsamic vinegar! πŸ˜‰

  8. Did you eat the fiddleheads, I have read they can make you quite ill. I am not sure I would try, but the flowery butter is definatley going to happen in our house.

    • I have read conflicting views on fiddleheads, and wonder if the stomach upsets are a result of eating the wrong type of ferns, since many people eat them raw without problems… We only ate a couple, but they were so tasteless when cooked we left the rest! Glad you like the butter – it certainly looks pretty melting over new potatoes! πŸ˜€

  9. I love the fact that you have used a combination of grasses, seedheads and flowers in your vase, Cathy – there is so much raw material at our disposal in our gardens when we start looking. The butter looks gorgeous – and I must check which of our ferns are fiddleheads and give them a try, for the purposes of science only, I think, from what you say πŸ˜‰

    • Hi Cathy. There really is a lot to choose from at the moment. After reading all about the ferns I nearly didn’t bother… they taste so much better raw, but I got cold feet and cooked them to be on the safe side! πŸ˜‰

  10. You have the most amazing home garden. I’m in awe. The climate in Colorado is entirely too arid to support such abundant garden varieties, but you’re inspiring me to design a high desert garden.
