And now for something completely different!
This week, for Cathy’s meme, “In a Vase on Monday”, where we are challenged to find flowers from our gardens to cut for a vase, I found this aging Allium schubertii “Fireworks” seedhead toppling over in my flowerbed. Time to rescue it and put it to good use! It was extremely tricky to take a photo of it though…
I started off with it in a tall blue vase, with some Peony foliage around it…
… but decided I liked it alone in the other vase best.
It’s great fun arranging fiddling around with flowers every Monday. Why not join in!
Take a look at what other people are putting in vases today at Cathy’s site “Rambling in the Garden“.

I think you’re right – alone against a plain background is very striking. Clever idea too, using the seedhead as an arrangement.
It seemed a bit lost in the blue vase and a plain background is easier for photos too. I learnt a lesson from that – it doesn’t stand out in the garden when it flowers because it needs something solid as a backdrop. I shall have to remember that when putting in bulbs this autumn!
I have never seen this plant before, had to Google it. I do grow a few Allium but this one is new to me. Nice pictures Cathy! π
Thanks Michael! It’s an eye catcher in spring if planted in groups. π
Wow, the red background and the clear vase really make the form of the allium stand out. Nice. Fun to see the evolution. Susie
Thanks Susie. I think the solid red background was the only way I could capture it in a photo…. I’m learning!
That’s really fun, I have one in a vase too from a couple of years ago and it still looks good. you could even spray it gold for Christmas.
I think I kept one last year too… using it as a Christmas decoration is a good idea! I could spray my hydrangea heads gold too! π
Oh yes Cathy – the first picture wins hands down (and the globular vase is perfect)! Like Christina, I still have allium heads from a few years ago – shows how useful they are, whether in flower, gone to seed on the plant or inside. A beautiful arrangement/plonkment – and a great example of how easy it is to bring these small pleasures into our homes. Thank you! π
Thanks Cathy. I like to think I’m recycling what would end up on the compost heap! π
This is great! π I love fireworks!
You were going to see some fireworks weren’t you? Hope you enjoyed them!
This yearsΒ΄s calendar is quiet different from others years. As our children get holidays lately, end of July, the annual fireworks will take place July-6th.I hope to be there.
The tall blue vase with the leaves has my vote. A lovely idea to use a very sculptural seed head.
Thank you Christine – I do like seedheads a lot, and will have to use more in future vases.
That looked great Fireworks!
Thanks Eunice! xx
Have a great day and enjoy the rest of your week!
I love it, Cathy!
Thank you Kris! π
I love it both ways and well done for managing to photograph it so well! It is lovely to see the details of this very useful seed head.
Thanks Julie – the photos are the trickiest bit!
Simple but most effective Cathy. I like the way the vase echoes the shape of the allium.
Thank you Anna!
Ur cool! Love how you used the allium!
Thanks Andrea! There are some other allium seddheads I might manage to use in a vase soon too!
THis is particularly nice, Cathy! I really like the “airiness” of it–if that is an appropriate word. π I think the first clear vase is perfect for this allium!
Thank you Debra! I have since removed the flower head from the vase to dry, in the hope that it will last a few months longer! π
Lovely, you don’ t need anything else with anything as dramatic as this. Do you grow the seeds?
No, I don’t have a greenhouse π¦ so seed-growing is just limited to herbs and a few annual flowers.
Very interesting use of spent blooms…I like it!
Thanks Donna!
Nice! I do like the first one the best…. it tempts me to bring a dandelion seedhead inside π
Now that’s an idea… π
Fireworks is a great name for it!! That is really creative and fun!!
And it’s so much fun looking for flowers every week!
