This week I can see many changes in the view as autumn gets a grip… the cooler nights have stopped fresh growth and much of the foliage is changing to its autumn colours. (The acer in the background is a lovely pale orange at the moment.)
In the above photo I tried to get exactly the same angle as last week’s, standing on the balcony and zooming in on the rockery. By lunchtime, most of the sun has gone from the sloping southern part; with the sun already much lower in the sky it is shaded by our fir trees.
The focus this week is the pink rose again, now that the red one is taking a break, but the lilac aster between the two roses is also calling modestly for a little attention…
Can you see it? I’ll get a little closer…
I am not sure of its name, but never mind.
I can still admire it!
And finally this is one of the smaller sedums planted in the rockery this spring – Sedum telephium ‘Herbstfreude’ (Autumn Joy), which says it all really…

Hi Anca! The autumn colours started suddenly a few days ago…. I opened the blinds one morning and caught my breath as the acer had changed colour overnight! 🙂

Yes, both our gardens rely on the light a lot for effect. I suppose you could say this season is like a second spring for you, with new growth after the rainfall. It’s sad to think it is coming to an end, but I have lots of other plans for winter to keep me distracted!
Your view is colorful and the sun’s position makes it more special. The lilac aster is charming.
Hi Susie. I should love more asters, but they are such thirsty plants and I rarely remember to give this one any water in summer!

So many high points in your garden this week, Cathy. The rose, the sedum and persicaria, as well as the stalwart ‘Blue Spires.’ BTW, mine arrived this week and have been planted. I’m hoping they become as beautiful as yours. I’m also appreciating your light yellow-green conifer, orange maple leaves and maiden grass.

I shall look forward to seeing how your Perovskia do next year. I have also planted a ‘Little Spires’ one at the base of the rockery. I hope it will settle in as well as the big brother above it! The maple should get better and better over the next couple of weeks. I do love those colours too. 🙂

Yes, I see the hints of fall as well. Sedums and asters in bloom means there’s no longer any chance of denying it!
I love your aster, it’s so simple and elegant with its nice color. I should really get a few more for my own garden!
The problem with asters is that I forget to water them in summer and then they don’t produce as many buds. I’d love more too though. Yes, autumn is here and it is lovely so far! One cool night (6°C) was not to the liking of one of my Ricinus though…

Your gardens our lovely each and every season. While our temperatures here in Florida really don’t change much with the beginning of fall, the light does. I’ll be watching to see how well our newly planted gardens adjust to less light. I’m looking forward to enjoying your fall weather as we start our travels in Germany next week. 🙂

Hi Annette! It is very similar to Lutetia, which I have in a different spot on the other side of the rockery. But this one is a deeper lilac and more like the Aster cordifolius I have seen on other blogs. I can’t find any record of where I ordered it from, so it will remain a mystery! I hope you have now had some rain Annette, and can enjoy some mild autumn days too! 🙂
Main thing is it’s beautiful. Yes, we’ve had some rain and things look much better, I’m so happy about it. such a worry when the sky is blue for months 😉 Weather is gorgeous right now, long may it last!
