In a Vase on Monday: Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to all of you!

I am joining the now famous Monday meme hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden: A single Amaryllis flower (Lemon Star) in a cocktail glass seemed to capture the spirit of New Year yesterday. The accompanying mini Sekt bottle is empty…. 😉

I hope you had a lovely break over Christmas and are refreshed and ready to start the new gardening year with optimism. It is still frozen here, with a light sprinkling of snow, so my garden will be slumbering a little longer.

Have a good week and a good start to the new year 2017!

  1. Your choice of accompanying props is perfect for the stunningly beautiful Amaryllis. Snow is forecast here next week too. It seems the cold winter that was forecast in autumn is going to happen, we’ve already had a couple to weeks of below zero temperatures at night. Happy New Year Cathy.

    • It’s snowed quite a bit today and is apparently going down to about – 14°C for a couple of nights here, so we have got plenty of wood in for the fire! 😉

  2. Hi Cathy, I found your blog at Rambling in the Garden!
Lovely presentation of the amaryllis bloom! Your photos capture the mood of the beginning New Year very well.
Best wishes for 2017, hope it will be a good garden year!
    Warm regards,
    Christina

  3. Happy New Year Cathy! No frost here, just rain! A week of rain will start California off to a wonderful New Year! Your Monday vase is always great inspiration for this haphazard gardener.

  4. Lovely photo and beautiful flower Cathy. Christmas was very low key here this year with no Amaryllis! I’m already planning to make up for it next Christmas…

    • Thank you Gillian. I have made planting Amaryllis a firm tradition now, as bare windowsills in January after the decorations are put away are just so depressing!

  5. Happy New Year to you, too, Cathy. My mother-in-law gave me an amaryllis bulb while she was visiting over Christmas. It’s in a paper bag waiting for me to plant it, or whatever you do with it! I’ve not grown one before…

    • They are really easy, but just need a bit of time to get going. My tip is to keep it fairly cool and dry until it starts sprouting. Then I usually move mine to a warm windowsill and give them an occasional drink. Good luck, and Happy New Year Sam!

  6. What a lovely way to greet the new year – both the bottle and the flower! I always intend to grow some amaryllis but forget to buy the bulbs in the autumn – perhaps this year I will manage it. It is good to hear that you have some snow – my family have headed to the Alps in France today supposedly to ski, but there is no snow at all. I wish you all the best for 2017. xx

    • I actually noted on my calendar to order the bulbs in early September when they become available. I must explore other suppliers though as half of the ones I bought this year have shown no signs of life yet and they have been planted up for ages. I hope your family gets some of the snow we have had the past two days as it heads south. 🙂

  7. Happy New Year, Cathy. That’s a lovely vingnette set against the backdrop of your crisp white curtains. I’m glad you’ve finally had some snow. It’s still cold here, with rain expected over the next several days. All my succulents are tucked away under weather-proofing tents. 🙂

    • Such good news that you are getting rain again Alys! We have had quite a bit of snow now, and it is getting colder and colder…. Hope you had a great Christmas. Have a lovely year 2017! 🙂

          • Oh, very nice. What’s the holiday? Do they celebrate the epiphany or is that just a coincidence? My husband was raised Catholic so he always gives us little gifts on January 6th. I wasn’t raised with a religious background, so it’s new to me.

            • Yes, it’s Epiphany. As Bavaria is mainly Catholic we get the day off. 🙂 In the UK we always take down Christmas stuff on this date, but here many people keep the tree or at least the lights up until Feb 2nd, another Catholic feast day (Candlemas). Can’t exactly remember what that is though! 😉 (We aren’t catholic either).

              • Oh that’s fascinating. It makes sense if you follow that the 12 days of Christmas end on the Epiphany. It’s funny how the western world has altered that in many ways. I guess it’s good that things are ever involving. 🙂

  8. Another beautiful amaryllis bloom from your Lemon Star 🙂 I hope you’re having a lovely start to the new year, Cathy!

    • Thank you Amy! Our year has started off with some wintry weather after a brief thaw at Christmas and it is lovely to have some snow at last! 🙂

  9. After a brief absence, Cathy, I just wanted to reach out to wish you a very Happy New Year. What a gorgeous amaryllis and I’ll be looking forward to rejoining you Monday with each additional lovely offering. 🙂
