This week I am joining not only Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for her Monday meme, but also – for the first time – Chloris at The Blooming Garden for her series of posts where she encourages us to choose our favourite ten blooms each month.
Ten favourites in various vases!
First of all this lovely Helianthus has outdone itself this year…
It was here when we came, but rarely did anything but produce a flower or two. Finally it is flowering profusely, but spreading profusely too!
I have combined it in this vase with my favourite Miscanthus, ‘Adagio’. I would highly recommend this dwarf variety which got established very quickly in my rockery and is a pretty focal point for much of the year.
Next, the Persicaria ‘Firetail’…
It got off to a slow start in July, after a very dry spring and early summer, but has recovered magnificently. The leaves are also very pretty and although it is rather tall it never flops, even after heavy rain or wind.
The rose behind it is one my sister gave me several years ago…
It didn’t do well so I moved it, and this year it seems to have settled in at last and has flowered a second time. It smells lovely. Sorry, no name – I call it ‘Susan’. 😉
Next up is my beloved Sedum. These flowers make us think of my partner’s grandmother, as she loved them so much. In fact some of them came from her garden, so again, I have no idea what sort they are.
However, this next sedum, which is in a patio pot, is Sedum cauticola ‘Robustum’…
It fills the edges of pots nicely with its dark stems and foliage, and then the flowers are an added bonus in September and October.
Another Miscanthus, possibly ‘Flamingo’ with a slightly pink tinge, is in the next vase, along with my currently favourite Japanese Anemone ‘Serenade’ and the white Scabiosa I sowed this spring – I think they are ‘Snowmaiden’.
Last but not least, the Cosmos I have been raving about for the past few weeks – Cosmos ‘Double Click Cranberries’…

Lots to love there, Cathy. That white scabiosa looks interesting – will it last hrough the winter? I am never sure with scabious. Hope your Mum feels better soon
Thanks Cathy. I’m not sure about the Scabious either, but it will be planted out soon and left to go to seed, so I shall just have to keep my fingers crossed! Hope it will be a mild winter and they may stand a chance. 🙂

A lovely end of summer display. My favorites are your white scabiosa and Japanese anemones, which I tried to grow once but failed. Time to try again!

I wonder why the anemones didn’t do well for you Eliza. I do hope you have better luck if you try again as they are such romantic flowers! 🙂
I may need to try again and pay better attention to the pH and soil humus. My soil tends towards acid. I think they’d look great in my shade garden.

Wow what a collection and your house must look fantastic. The sunflowers look so cheerful in your lovely jug. I’ve been looking at Cosmos seeds trying to choose for next year. These Double Click are certainly a contender.
Hi Alison. Yes, it was worth putting them all together just so I could spread them around the house! I would recommend the Cranberry cosmos. The only disadvantage is that the double flowers get quite heavy when wet and bend so you can’t really see the flower. Still, I will definitely grow them again!
Hope your mum feels better soon….and oh what flowers….looks like my garden which has gone through such extremes this year….now hot and dry for weeks in September. Especially love the grasses added to some of the vases.

You did a great job combining the 2 memes, Cathy. While my favorite of this week’s vases is the sunflower vase containing the cheerful sunflowers, I love that apricot rose and the ‘Double Click’ cosmos too. I hope your mom feels better soon.

I shall tell my Mum to read all these kind comments I’ve had and that should help perk her up a bit. 🙂 Several farmers near us have sown out soil improvers and bee food on some of their land which will then be plowed in late winter, which means we should be seeing sunflowers flowering until the frosts spoil them. 🙂
A wealth of beautiful blooms. Until I saw that last image I forgot that my mother had a very similar pitcher which one of my sisters now has. No better container for fall flowers.
Oh yes, this jug comes out whenever the sunflowers are in bloom! 🙂
I like them all and loved the MIscanthus when I could grow them! I also love unnamed passalongs like your Sedum, cherished for where they hail from and their flowers. But, I will be searching for those Cosmos seed shortly.

The apricot rose was intended to replace a beautiful one I lost, probably due to some novice pruning followed by a hard winter, many years ago… I do hope this one will be as lovely one day.

You certainly have plenty of blooms still brightening up the garden. The white scabiosa caught my eye–just lovely. The vase of sunflowers is dessert after the main floral feast.
