Yes, they are my favourite veggie burgers ever, and I can’t believe it took me so long to try making them!
They are so full of flavour, so quick to make, and so good for you too.
Here is my recipe, which has been tried and tested several times. I have tuned it to our taste, but try adding other herbs and spices if you prefer.
Black Bean Burgers
For four burgers you will need:
- 1 (400g/14oz) tin of black beans, drained and thoroughly rinsed
- 1 small onion, roughly chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 4 tbsps oats
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed (the sort that is like flour) or soya flour
- 2 tsps mixed herbs
- salt and pepper to taste
- dried breadcrumbs for coating
- oil for frying
Place all ingredients except the breadcrumbs and oil into a food mixer and process to a slightly chunky paste. Form into four patties, coat in the breadcrumbs and chill for at least thirty minutes. Then heat the oil in a frying pan and fry until golden brown. Serve in buns with fries and all the trimmings (e.g. gherkins, salad, ketchup and mustard or mayonnaise). π
Enjoy!
ME TOO! I will now add Flax. For the football game Sunday night it is what I am having GO PATS!!!!
Have a great football night Eunice!
Thanks he is going for his 6th ring but I could do without a heart attack π from his come from behind wins going to ask for a blowout!
These sound delicious. Thanks for the recipe.
You’re welcome, Sam. π
My husband and I love black bean burgers. I never thought to coat them with crumbs, and I will give it a try next time I make them. (I also make chickpea patties with slightly different spicing, oregano rather than chili powder.)
I love chickpeas in anything and make falafel sometimes – with cumin. π
Looks like a great recipe! Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome, and thanks for visiting!
Fab vegan burger! Love how easy the recipe comes together. A flavor packed dinner in 30 minutes is always a winning recipe.
I love quick recipes too and have managed to cut time to under 40 minutes on most of our everyday meals. Sometimes it’s fun to spend a few hours in the kitchen, but not always! π
I love a good black bean burger but I haven’t made them myself! I don’t think this recipe could be any easier, AND I have all the ingredients on-hand! Thank you! Yum!
I ate my first black bean burger only last autumn and loved it so much I decided I just had to recreate it at home. So easy! Hope you enjoy them if you make these Debra! π
Cathy, thank you very much for the recipe. Too easy! It looks very appetizing. On Saturday morning I buy all the ingredients and that will be my lunch with a good salad. I’ll tell you how I get it, because I’m a mess cooking except with vegetables. Greetings from Margarita.
I do hope you tried these burgers Margarita! Let me know how they turned out! π
Cathy the hamburgers did not come out round, but they were delicious! The first dough I made had to throw it out because it came out hard as a stone. But the second I got it. Do not cook, but your recipe has already taken the quiet: “Cathy burgers with a touch of Margarita that does not know how to make round” π π Take care. Greetings from Margarita.
So brave of you to try Margarita! They say practice makes perfect… π Happy cooking!
Yum! β€
Absolutely!
Agree with Debra and Eliza, will try!
Enjoy! π
Oh, yes, I love them, too. My daughter who’s a vegan has turned me on to quite a few interesting recipes, and this (or one like it) is one of them. Another delicious recipe she found was for quinoa tacos. Yum! π
It seems I am the only one to have just discovered them. Where have I been hiding?! But then I do live in Bavaria where black beans are rather exotic…. π
Yum yum yum.
Send us some.
With ketchup and mustard? Gherkins too? On the way! π
Thanks. I’m getting hungry. All the toppings you mentioned are fine, along with some sauteed onions.
I’ve been buying a frozen version to fall back on when we’re in a hurry for a meal, but your version sounds delicious. Must try. Thanks Cathy!
It is really quick Susie, and with no hidden ingredients like the shop-bought ones! π I have never seen them in the shops here, so when I saw a tin of black beans (also hard to find) I knew I had to try making them!
My all time favorite not his. I wish we had been raised eating these types of food I have tried so many new ways to eat since I turned 50 π 10 years ago lol
guess I have ready too many posts so I could not leave a like.
I know what you mean! I just try and eat what tastes good in small quantities… not easy though! LOL!
π but so worth waking each new day to try again π
Thanks Cathy – will try this recipe out before we next entertain vegan niece and boyfriend. The challenge might be finding a tin of black beans in our local shops π¦
It’s not easy to find them here either, so if I see them I buy two or three tins! Hope they turn out well for you Anna. π
I’ll take your word for it. Have you ever had refried black beans?
I may have had them some years ago, but Mexican food is not so common here. Various other beans are often on the menu here though, except for kidney beans which I find highly overrated. π
YUM! I’m going to try this recipe out this week! Thanks so much for sharing!
Hope you enjoy it Sheryl! I just started reading Lab Girl, and am loving it – thanks again for the recommendation! π
I’ll give it a go as gluten and dairy free too! Looks delicioys!
Hope you enjoy them! π
It looks bomb! Yums
Thanks!
Yum!! Love this recipe!
Thanks Allyson!
Iβve never tried a black bean burger before, they look tasty! π

Thanks Kelle. You should try them! π
